It's not clear if this is about a decline in the fashion industry on 7th Ave. or a decline in retail shopping. Not the same thing.

Guys it is the economy but it’s also the fact a lot of jobs were taken in exchange for cheaper labor over seas. Some of us are out here in the industry working to fight for fair labor against communism. Also intellectual property theft is big with all the devices and internet. Ofc things made with fair wages tend to cost more, but it depends where production is located in comparison to distribution. 🙏🏻It’s gonna take some work and time and it will look a little different but things are gonna turn around. There’s already ongoing massive acquisitions and redistribution of wealth. Which means other people with different values and work ethic will be running things. Vanguard and BlackRock own everything but that’s changing right now!

I'm from New York. I live in Las Vegas now, growing up in New York all the women want to look the same.. they all want to act the same.. and the Man act the same, very cringy. On the west coast the fashion is way cooler, women stand out they look different they don't copy other people. If you go to Texas you'll see the women are just blonde headed.. dyed blonde lol SO CRINGE. West Coast fashion is where it's at.

I see some people in the comments keep sayong that those who are poor ended up this way because of bad life choices. In my opinion, people who think this are either extremely idiotic, or they were born rich or married rich. They have CONNECTIONS that help them with everything in life, otherwise they wouldn't amount to anything.
Yes ,some people are broke because of poor life decisions. I agree. But there are also other situations. You can have a lot of money and lose it all if you suddenly get sick and need expensive treatment – I actually know a few cases and I myself have spent a great deal of money on various health issues. You may also be forced to take care of your parents, which costs money.
For the past 3-4 years people have been losing their jobs through no fault of their own, even software engineers thanks to AI, even people who worked at Google since the beginning of the company. Just this week Cisco, Infineon, Intel and other big comoanies announced they are firing tens of thousands of people who have been working there for years. And those people have high skills. Job losses will continue, hence the lack of money. Politicians aren't helping either.
As for those who comment that young people nowadays don't go out and therefore don't comsume as much as those who were young 20 years ago – 1. There is nothing wrong with being born an introvert. 2. Nobody has the obligation to keep YOUR business going or buy crappy products. 3. People will always do what they want even if you don't like it.
And another thing – NOTHING IS GUARANTEED IN LIFE. If you're rich now, something might happen and a year from now you won't be rich anymore.

People are broke. People dont go out to be seen. Fast fashion cheap fabrics get ugly quick so no one is attached. Since pandemic and WFH, super comfort has taken over. The young 20 somethings dont even like to wear heels on a night out anymore..if they even go out. Many reasons.

the fact clothes have degraded massively in quality isa major cause, polyester isnt even a good fabric its straight up plastic (Which isnt good for the environment) combine that with fast fashion and you've got mother nature's worst nightmare, theres also the decrease in just clothing quality in general when it comes to sewing and what not, zero understitching whatsoever, tacky zippers, zero wool or cotton, crappy fabric blends, then theres the fact thrift stores (who get their items for free) are now selling their items at high prices. whos gonna give a flying dung when everyones living off scraps to survive?

Globalisation and tech have destroyed the fashion industry as well as every other industry. With tech, most people work from home and dress more casually these days so there’s less of a need to be suited and booted unless you’re in a big client facing meeting.
Globalisation has meant that clothing can be produced very cheaply in third world countries at every price point and because young people’s salaries have not caught up with inflation, particularly house price inflation, fancy clothes are not their priority. Retailers suffer because rents are too high & people buy online. Those who own fashion businesses tend not to be the creatives but financiers so there’s less creativity & most apparel is homogeneous & safe.

Fashion is wasteful and encourages so much negativity. Appreciate what you have, wear what’s practical, wear it as many years as possible, and only buy what you need. The fashion industry tries to make us all feel lesser, feel self conscious , and wants us to spend as much money with them as possible to feel good about ourselves. Plus they exploit workers and create lots of waste too.

The fashion industry has gotten too divisive. They haven't been politically neutral in over 15 years. Completely out-of-touch with reality. Vogue needs to get rid of Anna Wintour. She's like the Mitch McConnell of the fashion industry. She must have something on somebody.

Gotta say. I'm not surprised… I worked as a fashion designer in Montreal for 30 years, beginning in the early 90's. The big change came when silk fabrics were replaced with cheap polyester from China and India, that looked and felt the same as silk, at a fraction of the cost. Soon after, North American clothing manufacturers discovered the endless source of very cheap labour in China and India, that made quality goods at a fraction of the cost that expensive unionized labour made. Everyone eventually closed up their unionised factories and imported goods from factories in China and India, as nobody could pay union wages and compete with quality clothes made by people in China and India, working for 1 dollar a day! Production costs were minimal and record profits were the new normal… the Montreal garment district is a thing of the past for over 10 years now. (All you need is a showroom and an office, anywhere, as the massive warehouse space has been eliminated because China and India factories will ship the goods, as needed, directly to the stores. It's a brand new world and we all need to learn to adapt… sink or swim folks!

    New York Fashion week
    HAS BEEN DEAD
I was a well known designer and creative director for Rihanna's first fashion show in NYFW in 2016. The bigger corporations and no talent executes in the back got greedy and pushed the real talent out of the way…to forge their identities and clout chase during the social media boom around that time. I worked with the very best in the industry who were the Soul of New York. We literally all left. Now New York is completely dead and disgusting. They need to get rid of the fake talent and bring back the originals. The ones ruining fashion are not designers, have zero taste, and need to be held accountable for killing fashion and New York City pop culture.
The executives used to just want the money. Now they want to be the designer, fake social media influencer, and fashion superstar…but literally have no taste, talent, or vision.

An ex felon newly released from Federal prison was representing Roc Nation and Universal… RECORDS …not fashion. They retained me to do Rihanna and Beyonce projects. The Lemonade Album…based in FASHION and Rihanna's PUMA campaign and first fashion show. He then went on to steal all of my concepts, take my salary and signing bonus, present the work as his own…and harass me in the back so that everything I produce he steals. To see him in real life…he is disgusting and not the face of fashion or style.
He and a partner single-handedly KILLED the entire fashion scene and also music
Look around everything is horrible and tasteless. 🚫.

    Money Talks

They can lie and say everything is great, pad social media bases, but brands are BROKE and they can't fake that. It's a war thats been going on for a decade strong behind the scenes.
    Do your research.

New York was financed on fashion and pop culture. The real estate was based on those careers. When one dies, they all die. This also impacts international markets…as investments to secure real fashion houses with centuries-old legacies were held up by New York: Chanel, LV, Prada, original Gucci…are not American. They are strongly rooted in European finance but New York was the commercial transmitter for advertisement and brand sustainability due to our immense consumer ship and disposable dollar being directed solely towards fashion each year.

They need to get real and get honest. Stop cheating real creatives and stop allowing frauds to steal from the artists who create the entire industry. It used to work now the entire island is dead. Cannot be revived.
